Dwayne Anling (left), Duane Stephenson (center) and Aston "Family Man" Barrett (right) from famous reggae group The Wailers visited Flor's house, a modest Colombian refugee home in Esmeraldas city. There are more than 50,000 Colombian refugees in Ecuador, and 8,000 of them live in the Esmeraldas province. The Wailers tell the world about malnutrition and its terrible consequences; WFP aids vulnerable people like these Colombian refugees to improve their nutrition with the monthly distribution of food rations. Not having to worry about where their food will come from leaves extra time to look for a job, an in the long run helps them to adapt and integrate. For more, click here
Stephenson Teams Up with Hiho Batik On the Creation of the FEED AFRICA! T-shirt With 100% of the Proceeds Being Donated to the
United Nations' World Food Programme
Duane Stephenson may be recognized as one of Reggae's most talented sons with his top selling releases, "August Town" and "Black Gold," but he is also a dedicated philanthropist. He has been spreading awareness of world hunger and supporting the efforts of the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) to end hunger worldwide, with special emphasis on the Horn of Africa, where a massive draught is causing a devastating famine. A United Nations institution, WFP is committed to getting food where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in 70 countries. Duane joins fellow musicians Christina Aguilera and 50 Cent in supporting this noble cause.
Duane has teamed up with Hiho Batik on the creation of FEED AFRICA! T-shirt. All of the proceeds from the sales of this cotton t-shirt benefit the WFP. This Hiho Batik is 100% handmade in the batik tradition, making each one an individual work of art. The sale of one t-shirt for $40 raises enough money to feed 40 children in the Horn of Africa.
Last year, Duane Stephenson wrote and recorded "A Step for Mankind," an exclusive track which calls for world unity and strength to support the ongoing struggle against world hunger. Recorded with the legendary Wailers, "A Step for Mankind" features vocalist Koolant, a fresh talent from the heart of St. Thomas known for blazing a positive future for reggae music with his work. The track also introduces Dr. Dre prot'eg'e Bishop Lamont, an up-and-coming rapper, whose magical flow in the song's breakdown melds beautifully with the distinctive groove of the Wailers. 100% of the sales of the track on iTunes benefit WFP.
The Wailers and Duane Stephenson pride themselves on making a difference in the world a way of life. These reggae artists have inspired the Barrett family to share the same commitment. This reggae clan, consisting of seven siblings and father Aston, has turned fighting world hunger into a family affair.
Since 2008, the children have worked exceedingly hard to give hunger a voice. This past summer the young activists sold Africa T-shirts in Nantucket at markets. Each shirt they sold fed 40 kids. Not only do buyers get an awesome shirt, but they also learn about the famine that is currently taking place in the Horn of Africa.
Hiho Batik has teamed up with The Wailers & Reggae superstar Duane Stephenson to create this tee in response to the devastating drought in Africa. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the hungry men, women & children of Africa through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
